Engineers from the Research Center of the European Maritime Safety Agency have announced an increase in the number of prohibited types of oil tankers that Russia uses to transport oil.
We are talking about the so-called single-hull tankers without ice class. In such ships, the cargo tanks are separated from the sea by only one skin. In the event of a collision, grounding or corrosion, the metal easily collapses, which leads to an immediate release of oil or fuel oil into the water.
Moscow actively uses them on the Northern Sea Route and in the Arctic, although such tankers without ice class are not adapted to sailing in ice. This significantly increases the risk of a hole. According to monitoring data, 75 single-hull tankers are already operating on Arctic routes. Their numbers are growing
Researchers are calling on international maritime organizations to tighten control over tankers of the type that transport Russian oil. Scientists are also demanding the creation of an accelerated procedure for removing such ships from maritime registers and imposing sanctions on them.
