The environmental consequences of an oil spill from a tanker of the Russian «shadow fleet» in the Gulf of Finland will affect about 100 thousand residents of Vyborg, Primorsk, Vysotsk and other coastal settlements, as well as unique natural objects. This is the conclusion of the environmental organization Greenpeace based on a simulation of the spill.
«Unique natural areas will be destroyed — Kurgalsky, Vyborgsky reserves and Berezovsky Islands. The scale of the spill may be 10-15 times greater than in the accident of the Volgonafta class tankers in December 2024,» Greenpeace said in a message on Telegram.
As noted, this scenario is based on the routes of the Peace tanker — a sanctioned, outdated 247-meter vessel without a flag and proper insurance, capable of transporting up to 110 thousand tons of oil per voyage. «In 2025, it exported Russian oil through the Baltic Sea four times — a total of 440,000 tons worth more than $ 10 million. These revenues go, among other things, to finance the war against Ukraine.»
