Greenpeace activists have launched a protest against a bunkering vessel spotted refueling a Russian so-called “shadow fleet.”
Activists say the Zircone, which is in international waters off the Swedish island of Gotland, has been supplying fuel to more than 50 oil tankers heading to or from Russian ports in the past two months.
Environmentalists approached the ship in boats and wrote on the tanker “oil fuels war — people want peace.”
“The Russian fleet is a serious threat to our precious seas and coastlines. We call on the Swedish government to block Zircone’s operations in the Swedish economic zone and thus eliminate critical infrastructure for the Russian fleet, which is financing the war in Ukraine,” said Rolf Lindahl, one of the leaders of Greenpeace Nordic.
Lindahl added that the Russian Federation’s so-called “shadow fleet” is not only an environmental threat, but also fuels Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“The sanctions are vague because they allow this shadow fleet because of the global society’s dependence on oil. There is an urgent need to transition to safe, green energy,” Lindahl added.
