Representatives of environmental organizations in Greenland have issued a statement protesting the actions of the Russian shadow fleet in the Arctic region. Environmentalists are primarily concerned that the number of oil tanker voyages in the Arctic region has increased dramatically in recent times.
Accordingly, the number of accidents and oil spills involving these ships has increased. This is primarily due to the fact that these tankers are very old and do not meet environmental standards. Greenlandic environmentalists are also concerned that Russian ships use fuels prohibited in the Arctic region, which affects the increase in the number of harmful emissions in the Arctic Ocean.
Another dangerous practice is the use of so-called single-hull ships in the Arctic region. These are ships with extremely weak protection, which are generally banned from use in this region, but are actively used by Russian oil companies to transport energy resources.
Environmentalists advocate strengthening the sanctions regime, in particular, for the introduction of special law enforcement missions that could arrest ships directly on the high seas. They also support a ban on the provision of maritime services in European ports
