Several hundred members of Indonesian environmental organizations took to the streets to protest against the violation of environmental standards by tankers of the shadow fleet in Indonesian territorial waters. The activists came out with the slogans «No to fossil fuels», «No to oil transshipment», «We will not let our water be polluted».
The participants are against the so-called oil transshipments, which are an extremely dangerous practice. First of all, this refers to the constant practice when ships of the shadow fleet transfer oil between themselves in the open sea in order to hide its origin.
The procedure is as follows. Two tankers drive up to each other and transfer oil between themselves through special pipes. However, this practice is quite dangerous, since very often during its implementation environmental accidents occur. They threaten significant emissions of oil and petroleum products into the open space, which will affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of coastal residents.
The participants in the action demand more stringent measures against such practices, in particular, conducting special environmental inspections in Indonesian territorial waters, which could punish oil tankers for transshipment of oil in Indonesian waters.
