Representatives of the environmental societies of Wales have issued a statement of concern about the growing danger from tankers of the Russian shadow fleet. In their statement, they stressed that over the past month the number of tanker voyages carrying oil from Russian ports in the Baltic and the Arctic Ocean has increased sharply.
Therefore, the number of oil spills into the open sea has increased. This is due to the fact that, as a rule, these ships are very old and do not meet environmental standards. Also, ships often carry excess cargo, so there is a threat of even larger accidents.
Environmentalists also emphasize that shadow tankers actively use prohibited types of fuel, and also move along routes that involve movement through the territory of nature reserves. This threatens serious problems for the space of these reserves.
In this regard, Welsh environmentalists are demanding increased action against the shadow fleet, in particular, the introduction of even more maritime law enforcement missions that could inspect shadow fleet tankers on the high seas.
