Representatives from several Danish environmental organizations staged a protest against the increasing movement of «shadow fleet» tankers in the Baltic Sea. Dozens of people gathered for a rally, displaying slogans such as «No to fossil fuels,» «No to Baltic Sea pollution,» and «No to blood oil.»
Activists expressed concern over the rising number of voyages by Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Baltic Sea. These tankers are often very old and fail to meet environmental standards, leading to an increased risk of oil leaks.
These vessels lack adequate insurance—specifically coverage for damages such as oil spills—meaning that the affected country would have to bear the cost of cleaning up after any potential accident, similar to the incidents involving Russian tankers in the Black Sea last December.
The group called on the European Commission to ban the import of Russian fossil fuels and stated that European companies should terminate any contracts for such imports from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Activists also demanded tougher measures against Russia’s shadow fleet tankers, specifically calling for a ban on port services within the EU and the detention of vessels carrying Russian oil.
