Environmental Accident Threats

A new edition of our weekly monitoring of dangerous shadow fleet tanker voyages

Several sanctioned tankers have been recorded in various regions, the movement of which has created a threat of environmental disaster.

The sanctioned tanker LIA, IMO 9041057, flagged Equatorial Guinea, is sailing around the island of Rhodes.

The sanctioned tanker NEON, IMO 9183295, flagged to Sierra Leone, is drifting near the Suez Canal.

The sanctioned tanker SAMADHA, IMO 9286281, flagged Sierra Leone, is sailing towards Gibraltar.

The sanctioned tanker MERU, IMO 9187227, is sailing in the Black Sea under the flag of Equatorial Guinea.

The sanctioned tanker OCEAN II, IMO 9233777, Cameroonian flag, is sailing off the Faroe Islands towards the Barents Sea.

The sanctioned tanker GARUDA, IMO 9272931, flying the flag of Sierra Leone, is drifting in the Atlantic Ocean.

All of these tankers are very old (built in 1999-2004) and operate without insurance. They often turn off their navigation systems to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies. There is a risk of oil spills.
