Representatives of environmental organizations of the Republic of China, which is located on the island of Taiwan, held a protest against the dangerous practices of the Russian shadow fleet. More than a hundred participants came out with posters saying «We will not allow the Pacific Ocean to be polluted», «No bloody oil», «No oil transshipments».
The participants of the action stated that they are concerned about the increased activity of tankers of the Russian shadow fleet in the Pacific Ocean. They are especially concerned about the accident rate of tankers, since the ships that carry oil and liquefied natural gas from Russian ports are usually very old. And this leads to frequent oil spills into the open sea.
Environmentalists also stated that they are concerned about the dangerous practices of Russian tankers, in particular, such as oil transshipments. This is a method of concealing the origin of oil, when two tankers transfer it between themselves in the open sea in order to hide the origin of the cargo. The procedure itself is complicated and dangerous. When it is implemented, oil emissions often occur. This threatens a significant environmental disaster
Therefore, Taiwanese environmentalists advocate strengthening control over the movement of sanctioned tankers, in particular, introducing special environmental inspections in the Pacific Ocean, which could check the technical condition of ships in order to avoid possible accidents.
