A number of representatives of international environmental organizations took to the protest action near the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization. Up to a hundred participants came out with posters «No to the danger of the shadow fleet», «We are against bloody oil», «We demand the fight against the shadow fleet».
The participants of the action stated that they are increasingly concerned about the growing danger from the tankers of the Shadow Fleet, namely from the ships that carry oil and liquefied natural gas from Russian ports. They explain this by the fact that these are, as a rule, old ships of 15-20-25 years old, which move without insurance and, accordingly, oil spills often occur with them.
They also note that the tankers of the shadow fleet organize dangerous practices right at sea, in particular the so-called oil transshipments. This is a method to confuse the origin of the oil. It consists in transferring oil from one ship to another right on the high seas. This is a very dangerous practice, which often ends in environmental accidents.
Environmentalists believe that more and more such practices lead to colossal leaks of energy resources into the world ocean, which leads to dangerous consequences for the flora and fauna of the marine space. Therefore, they advocate for strengthening the fight against tankers of the shadow fleet, in particular, conducting special inspections in the high seas.
