Representatives of French environmental organizations have issued a statement of protest against the dangerous practices of the shadow fleet on the high seas. The document was signed by more than a hundred representatives of various environmental organizations.
First of all, the researchers emphasize the condition of the ships, which, as a rule, are extremely old and lead to environmental accidents. It is such tankers that are used to transport Russian oil and liquefied natural gas. Environmentalists also emphasize the danger of the so-called transshipment of oil on the high seas, which are actively practiced by Russian oil ships.
This is a method of origin of the cargo, when oil is transferred between two oil ships on the high seas. That is, from one sanctioned ship it is transferred to one that is not under sanctions. This practice is very dangerous and leads to oil emissions into the high seas.
Therefore, representatives of environmental organizations declare the need to step up the fight against the Russian shadow fleet. In particular, they advocate a ban on the provision of maritime services in European ports and the introduction of special environmental law enforcement missions that could inspect tankers on the high seas and arrest them in case of violations.
