Representatives of a number of German environmental organizations have taken out a protest action against the increased movement of shadow fleet tankers in the Baltic3 Sea. Several dozen people organized a rally with the slogans «No to fossil fuels», «NO to pollution of the Baltic Sea», «No to bloody oil».
The activists said that they were concerned about the increase in the number of trips of Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Baltic Sea. Such tankers are very old and do not meet environmental standards, which is why the number of oil leaks is increasing.
These vessels do not have proper insurance, in particular against losses such as oil spills, and therefore the environmental consequences of any potential accident, similar to the one that occurred with Russian tankers in the Black Sea last December, will have to be eliminated by the affected country itself.
The group called on the European Commission to ban imports of Russian fossil fuels and said European companies should terminate any contracts for such imports from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. The activists also demanded a stronger crackdown on Russian shadow fleet tankers, including the suspension of services in EU ports and the detention of oil ships carrying Russian oil.
