An oil slick has appeared in the Black Sea 11 kilometers off the coast of Anapa and is drifting toward the shore. This was reported on Saturday, April 11, by the Krasnodar Krai task force. According to the task force, more than 200 dead and oil-smeared birds were also found on the coast of Anapa. The task force noted that the slick was treated with 45 kg of biosorbent and that booms were installed. However, these measures failed to stop the oil spill from drifting toward the shore.
A possible source of the pollution could have been a tanker anchored south of the Kerch Strait. On April 7, a satellite detected an oil spill near the tanker. Over the next four days, westerly winds could have caused the slick to drift toward the coast of the Anapa Spit. However, environmentalists have not yet been able to determine exactly which tanker caused the leak, as there were 30-40 vessels at the spill site at the same time.
