Madagascar’s environmentalists oppose turning island into Russian oil hub

Representatives of Madagascar’s environmental organizations have spoken out against the government’s plans to turn the island into a Russian oil hub. Up to a hundred participants came out with posters reading «NO to the oil base,» «We are against fossil fuels,» and «We will not let Madagascar be destroyed.»

The participants tried to block a number of port facilities, but the police pushed them away and the rally continued in a more peaceful manner. The activists said they had learned about the new Malagasy government’s plans to establish a transshipment base for Russian shadow fleet ships on the island.

In fact, shadow tankers often sail near the island, transporting oil and gas to ports in India and China. It became known that there are plans to create a logistics and transport center where these ships could transfer oil and replenish supplies.

Such cooperation between Madagascar and Russia became especially intense after the military coup in October 2025, which brought a military junta to power. The new government has set a course to intensify cooperation with Russia. Significant supplies of military equipment have already been identified.

Environmental organizations have stated that they are categorically against the formation of an oil hub on the island, as this will lead to the destruction of unique flora and fauna. Therefore, environmentalists declare the need to abandon any cooperation with shadow fleet companies.
