Representatives of environmental organizations in New Zealand have taken to the streets to protest the accident rate of the shadow fleet tankers. Up to a hundred activists gathered for an impromptu rally and unfurled posters «We are against bloody oil», «The shadow fleet pollutes the planet», «Close the movement of oil ships»
The participants of the action stated that recently in the Indian and Pacific Oceans the number of accidents involving oil tankers has increased. The vast majority of them are ships transporting oil from Russian ports. Since these ships are very old, they are therefore very accident-prone. Activists fear that this will lead to the destruction of the environment
Environmentalists advocate strengthening the sanctions policy regarding the shadow fleet ships, as well as conducting inspections of the technical condition of the ships right on the high seas. The participants also emphasize the need for a coordinated policy among the countries of the Pacific region in combating environmental pollution and opposing sanctions violations.
