Tankers from Russia’s “shadow fleet” will continue to dump naphtha into European waters, ignoring sanctions and service barriers that create the risk of large-scale environmental disasters, Politico reports in a statement to Investigative journalistic group SourceMaterial.
During the rest of the river, investigators recorded at least five episodes of oil spills on the shores of Europe from Russian tankers, which were caught before the sanctions were circumvented.
Two of these ships were sailing under the British lines even when the sea became rough. SourceMaterial’s investigation revealed at least five types of spills in the remaining river, and the vessel’s activities were already under sanctions.
Latvian Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis called this situation a “great problem,” adding that Europe is “surprised by the environmental disaster.”
The British Ministry of Health said that the “shadow fleet” is President Putin’s unsafe attempt to protect nafta revenues, vikorist vessels that “ignore basic safety standards.”
Satellite imagery and shipping data confirm that the fleet, estimated by Lloyd’s List Intelligence to number close to 1,300 vessels, is virtually uncontrolled.
This activity is related not only to oil spills, but also to damage to the underwater infrastructure.
