Representatives of environmental organizations in Uruguay, Paraguay and Ecuador protest against the growing number of shadow fleet voyages due to the increasing accident rate of these voyages.
Researchers and specialists are very concerned that recently the number of accidents, when mentioning shadow fleet tankers, this primarily refers to ships carrying oil and liquefied natural gas from Russian ports, has increased by 20-25%.
First of all, this is due to the fact that the ships are usually old, 20-25 years old, do not comply with technical standards and use prohibited types of fuel. Environmentalists also draw attention to the growing danger that accompanies these tankers in connection with various kinds of military conflicts.
Environmentalists are calling for a stronger fight against shadow fleet tankers, in particular by introducing inspections on the high seas, strengthening sanctions policies, introducing increasingly tough sanctions against such vessels, and banning them from providing maritime services.
