Representatives of Swedish environmental organizations express concern about the movement of tankers of the Russian shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea. According to the results of the study, tankers have increasingly begun to choose new routes that pass in close proximity to the country’s coast.
According to the researchers’ precise calculations, 156 tankers of the “shadow fleet” have already used this dangerous route between the beginning of March and mid-June of this year.
The situation is complicated by the fact that these vessels regularly sail with their navigation transponders completely turned off, deliberately hide their national affiliation or sail without a flag at all. In most cases, the ships do not even have international financial insurance.
Experts say 31 Russian shadow fleet ships not only passed by, but even entered Sweden’s 12-mile sovereign maritime zone. They are calling for a ban on Russian oil tankers from entering Swedish territorial waters.
